UPDATE: I jailbroke 2.0

This might end up being a long post so I???ll answer one simple question now that I???ve managed to do it.

Is it worth the upgrade? If you’re going to buy apps from the app store yes, if you’re going to do nothing with the update then no.

I’m going to run through everything that happened during my rough and annoying time of getting to the 2.0 update (read my previous post for links on how to upgrade).

First I wasn’t sure about jailbreaking and unlocking it on my Mac as I wanted everything to be on my main pc but at the time the jailbreak method was only available for the Mac so I had no choice. I went and backed up anything I needed for when I get my phone back such as pictures and any other media files I wanted to keep. First thing I did was upgrade my iphone to 2.0 firmware so I was stuck with the “slide for emergency calls” screen, I then went ahead and opened up pwnage tool and everything was running pretty smooth. Since this was my first time I done a simple jailbreak and not the advance option, as I was going through the steps I got to a screen that said “failed to boot in DFU mode” which I didn’t even know what DFU mode was, when I looked it up I thought it was another name for recovery mode but no.

DFU mode is in fact something that basically turns your phone off but it’s not really off, I know it sounds a bit weird but when you enter DFU mode your screen will be blank and you can do nothing to your phone until you restore it using iTunes but it can still be detected when you connect it to a computer. This is where everything went bad for me as when I got it into DFU mode it still said it failed in pwnage so at this point I have a phone that for some reason I couldn’t restore and pwnage was not detecting so I had a nice little paperweight at this point. I searched Google for an answer but all I found were people saying all they did was return it to Apple which is impossible for me to do for certain reasons, in the end I had the idea that instead of restoring it to 2.0 in iTunes I???ll try restoring it to my custom 1.1.4 firmware on my pc that I created when using winpwn.

Sadly this didn’t work so one last idea I got was restoring it to the official 1.1.4 firmware and it did work in a way but it just put my phone into recovery mode so now was the time that I had to restore to the 2.0 firmware and once again get back to the slide for emergency calls screen. After being happy that I knew how to get out of DFU mode I was stuck with a useless iphone. I thought I???ll give it one more try so this time I put it in DFU mode before I did anything and for some reason that made all the difference. When I got to the DFU screen in pwnage it told me to turn it off yet it was in DFU mode so why am I being asked to turn it off even though I’ve done what I???m being asked to do? So all I did was press the power button while the phone was in the dock and it turned back on (which I found strange as that didn???t do anything earlier when I tried), then pwnage told me to put it into DFU mode, at least pwnage gives you instructions on how to put it into DFU mode at this point.

Once I finally got through all that it told me to close pwnage and restore my phone in iTunes with the firmware that was created so thankfully I got through all that and managed to jailbreak 2.0 (you have no idea how happy I was after all the time spent thinking I had a useless phone). Even though I can’t use installer as it’s not compatible with the 2.0 firmware I really don’t miss it that much now that I have the app store. I’ve already downloaded a bunch of free apps and purchased super monkey ball, bejewelled 2 and band which are all amazing. I was very surprised at the fact that I didn’t lose any data on my phone, normally when you update on a jailbroken iphone you lose everything but this time I had all my contacts, all my e-mails and all my sms messages. Only thing I lost was ringtones, music and videos but that was nothing really.

The phone does seem to be a bit slower than before and has restarted itself once for some unknown reason and as I was playing bejewelled it stopped and went back to the springboard (that’s the main screen if you don’t know). I also lost the pictures I added to the phone but the pictures in my camera roll are still there which is a nice bonus in this case. Everything seems to work fine apart from the odd little bits but in the end I found that it was all worth it (for me anyway). If you have upgraded to 2.0 and want to go back to 1.1.4 then you can follow this tutorial. If you are not sure about going to 2.0 then don’t do it as it’s something you need to be ready for as this is a bit more complicated than the other jailbreaks, if you are really willing to go through with it then go for it and hope you didn’t have as much trouble as I did.

I still think that pwnage tool needs a bit of work with the DFU part but the rest seems ok, like I said if you do upgrade to this then you won’t really miss installer as long as you take advantage of the app store but if you upgrade and do nothing with it then you might be a little bored as all those installer apps are gone for now but they will come back when they become compatible. Any questions then comment or e-mail me.
